How to Ask for a Raise 2026: Scripts, Timing, and Strategy

How to Ask for a Raise

Asking for a raise is one of the highest-ROI activities in your career. Most people don't ask, or ask incorrectly.

When to Ask

After completing a major project. During performance review (but not only then). When taking on additional responsibilities. When market rates have increased. After 12+ months in role with strong performance. Never ask when company is doing layoffs.

How to Prepare

Research market rates (Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, Payscale). Document your achievements with metrics. Get competing offers if possible. Prepare specific ask (not range). Practice your pitch.

What to Say

Opening: "I'd like to discuss my compensation. I've been here X years and my contributions have expanded significantly." Evidence: present 3-5 specific achievements with measurable impact. Ask: "Based on my contributions and market data, I'm requesting a salary of $X." Be silent after asking.

If They Say No

Ask what would need to happen for a raise. Set specific, measurable goals with timeline. Get it in writing. Consider if the company is worth your continued investment.
